One of my life’s most astonishing experiences will always be twice riding for an hour in a gondola, with not another boat in sight. The water calm. I was surrounded by the architecture, the ornatments on the boat, and the sound of the oar (“remo”) moving the water. It was almost too much beauty to bear.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Linoleum cut on hand-made mulberry paper / 5 x 4 inches / limited edition / Available In the past year it was our family’s turn to be exposed to sorrow and loss. I imagined my Nymphs, usually so playful and feisty, and how they would give solace to one another. I wondered about clothing them, about the nudity. But a visit to Moroccan hammam, where the women left their clothes in a locker to wash and restore their spirits in the beautiful waters convinced me that the nudity was right. The small size, however, bothered me. I wanted to try them at a bigger size, and so I made Grief.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Linen / 48 × 30 in / Available in January at Cutter & Cutter Fine Art This painting is an hommage to the artist Criss Canning of Australia, whom I enormously admire. We had a great conversation on the podcast “An Artful Life,” which you can find on that tab of this website. My friend Nandini said to me while looking at Criss’s paintings, “You should do a monochoromatic theme painting like she does.” And I thought that was a wonderful idea. I strayed a bit from the rose theme, but nonetheless there are many, many shades of rose. Coral. Salmon. Etc. The silk velvet was an investment I made in Venice, from the Bevilaqua family of weavers. They’ve been making textiles for palaces since the 1400s, and the beauty of their materials is a source of inspiration to me. Yes, you can make magnificent art using rags and remnants of inexpensive fabric. But I love to incorporate the most sophisticated and glorious fabric I can find. That makes me happy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on linen / 20 × 24 in / Available at Cutter & Cutter Fine Art in January 2026 I spent an autumn in Palermo, to collect my thoughts and recover after a challenging year. It was a good choice. I took with me some of my most treasured fabrics, including this saffron silk from Tetouan, Morocco. The dazzling lushness of it always lifts my spirits. The other treasures were suggested by the Sicilian adventure. I do favor having an avatar in a still life, a tiny adventurer. So when I met the snails, I was delighted.</image:caption>

Think puppet theaters. And the uglier and crazier the world gets, the more I yearn to make the stages beautiful. My newest avatar is the snail. The “Begin Anew” series reflects that. All these paintings are about moving from one life stage to another. <image:caption>Oil on Linen / 24 x 30 / 202 / Available at Reinert Fine Art I composed this still life intuitively, hungering for the luxurious textures and saturated color. When I was finished, the silk ribbons draped around the vase reminded me of a man in evening wear, who has loosened his bow tie and is relaxing. The saffron silk came from Rabat, Morocco, in the mid-1800's. I am becoming deeply interested in historical textiles. Things still made by hand... Many of the “Begin Anew” series feature and mother and daughter rabbit, in honor of my mother’s passing this Spring on the eve of my birthday. Tired of simplified backgrounds, I went for the most baroque piece of fabric I own: four feet of Bevilacqua silk damask from Venice. This painting nearly killed me with complexity, but when the light began to feel as if filtering through a shaded window, then I knew I was on the right track.</image:caption>

I was given loose perimeters, being able to include rabbits, tea and flowers if I so chose. I was able to virtually meet the clients. What a joy it was to create three paintings for a woman who had inspired so much love. <image:caption>Oil on Linen/ 39x39 in / Sold at Cutter & Cutter Fine Art A month in Venice during lock-down enriched my spirit with the decadent textures of the watery city. We also discovered fabrics by the house of Fortuny, a Spaniard who moved himself to Venice and began a textile empire. The rabbit, ready to float onto the canals in her silver boat, loved all the decadence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Linen / 20 x 16 inches / 2017 One of an artist's great pleasures is painting the portrait of someone beloved and well known. Debbie and I have been friends since I was sixteen. I have always loved her wearing the color blue, and here I literally bathed her in the royal color. Painting her and thinking of years of friendship reminded me of a beautiful quote about female friendships. “This is what they had always done together. The necessity of saying it out loud. Talking for the sheer pleasure, the hilarity. To be witness to the stunning accumulation of a life.” - Victoria Redel Private Collection</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on linen / 74x38 in / Sold at Cutter & Cutter Fine Art Venice is a remarkable place, all the more noticeable for being entirely pedestrian. Strolling the narrow streets is to observe evidence of the power that the Venetians wielded over the Mediterranean, and as the endpoint of the Silk Road from China. The glass and silks that Venetians created for palaces all over Europe and Asia are on many corners. The palazzos have beautiful facades, but they do not welcome the random traveler. While spending a month in Venice during Covid lockdown, I sometimes felt like an outsider looking in. And I felt lucky even at that. Silks by Bevilaqua and Serithea (designed by Daud Akhriev). Cotton by Fortuny Venice. The object d’art: my own collection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In a street market I found a woman selling scraps of the fiercely expensive Fortuny fabric—-Venetian cotton which is hand-dyed and then hand-printed with gold ink. I bought as much as I could, and here begin getting acquainted with it’s properties against the beautiful silk walls of our apartment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In an uncrowded Venice, exploring little alleys and tiny passages became easy and inviting. Everyday I found places which seemed to invite rendezvous. One spot near La Fenice had a private dock of aged wood, and easy gondola access. That’s where I would meet my beau if I was wearing heels… The walnut ink of this drawing behaved differently than I expected when I added a little wash. I think I like it, though.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While in Venice we had several beloved visitors, each of whom desired a gondola ride. I so resisted romanticizing the Gondolieri, but I failed. Resultingly, many of my sketches involve visiting single women seeking something from them. It’s left to your imagination to discover what is they wanted ; )</image:caption>

<image:caption>When still in high school I bought a polka-dotted silk scarf in complex yellows. This is the earliest appearance it made in a painting. When I met my husband, Daud Akhriev, his homeland was in civil war, and our family there lost everything. This still life had beautiful texture, but the head underneath was hidden. It symbolized my nostalgic for my innocence, when I had no second-hand experience of atrocities. Current location unknown location.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Once a large still life with the beloved polka dots, this self portrait I painted over top, with a quilting theme. Several important women in my family are quilters, and the tradition of making something out of scraps into a strong and useful new creation is a process which resonates in my life. The title comes from a Sade lyric. Property of the artist.</image:caption>

As well as the favorite yellow polka dots, here notice the multi-colored silk table cover which was an Irish gift from Amy Von Thun in the 1980s. It will show up again. <image:title>Blog - In Good Hands, Italian Style - Paolo Uccello</image:title>
<image:caption>This painting has been meaningful to me for twenty years because it has all the animals I love (silly reason, I know, and yet...) and because of the forceful use of space. The complexity of organizing so many beings and activities in one canvas is brilliant. And the horses, they are so chubby and dear they break my heart. </image:caption>
